They call me Mum. Our grandchildren were both in nappies [when they came to live here] ... so it is not like being a grandparent, it is like being parent all over again ... For most grandparents the arrival of a grandchild is a thrilling and eagerly anticipated event. You expect that you will play a fundamental role in their lives as sources of love, wisdom, stability and family identity. You probably also expected to be an occasional babysitter! However, you probably never expected that you would have to assume their full-time parental care because their parent(s) were unwilling or incapable of caring for them.
It is lovely being a grandparent...But, we would love to be just normal grandparents, just ordinary normal grandparents...

… she had never seen an ironing board and an iron [before] ... so when I lifted the iron up and the steam, and the steam came spurting out … she got the fright of her life … [sigh] just things, normal household things … normal household things that your children have been reared seeing, but these kids are just in awe...
You know they have never had clean linen on their beds, they’ve never had a clean bathroom … let alone toilet … and I mean ironing …what’s that?! They’ve never had the clothes to iron anyway
